Chimera is a work for two-part massed saxophone ensemble by Australian composer Andrew Ball. Chimera is arranged for variable instrumentation, ideally eight or more mixed saxophones. The work has only two independent parts, each to played in written unison for any SATB saxophones. The resulting sounding pitch of this ‘written unison’ therefore harmonises in perfect 5ths/4ths/octaves (inherent in the key transposition between SATB saxophones). The ensemble should be distributed as evenly and balanced between as possible between the two parts, depending on the ensemble. For example, SATB on part A + SATB on part B, or, say, SAAATTB on part A + SSAATBB on part B. The two parts may be spatialised as such in performance (i.e left and right of stage). Stylistically, the piece should be played with mechanical rhythmic precision and forceful articulation. Generally part A and B will hocket and alternate melodic lines. Play brashly, heavily, angrily, and capriciously throughout.

▪️Program Notes from the composer:

A chimera is a single organism comprised of cells or parts of distinct animals. In Greek mythology, it was a monstrous fire-breathing hybrid of a lion, goat, and serpent. This work evokes it’s namesake in it’s belligerent character and it’s linear, minimalistic approach to structure and orchestration.
