Chthonic Fanfare is a work for saxophone quartet composed by Australian saxophonist, Andrew Ball for his ensemble Barega Saxophone Quartet. This work was recorded on the quartet's second album, Abandon Control, in 2017 and has grown become one of the ensemble's most popular and highly performed works. Chthonic Fanfare evokes Ball's signature compositional style with intricate rhythmic patterns, changing time signatures, and detailed articulation to create an energising piece that is sure to impress your audience. Parts often work in pairs throughout the piece to create a reinforced sound and add to the strength of the piece. With minimal altissimo, the piece would be suitable for saxophonists at a tertiary level or higher.

Chthonic, meaning 'subterranean', refers to deities, spirits or demons that inhabit the underworld. What would ti sound like if these arcane creatures
were heralded with a majestic fanfare? The work is essentially orchestrated as a 'double duet"', at times evoking the raw power of a fanfare through harmonic parallelism, at times embracing the chaos of the composer's
idiosyncratic side-slipping metric disruption.
