Colour of Memory is a diptych for saxophone quartet composed by Australian saxophonist, Andrew Ball for his ensemble Barega Saxophone Quartet. This work is the title track on the quartet's second album, Abandon Control, and has been performed in Australia and internationally.

Colour of Memory is a diptych encompassing two thematically related complementing movements; Abandon control cast fire, and Dream of forgotten twilight. This work evokes an abstraction of intense emotional states, and deals with our perception of reality being 'coloured' by emotion.
Abandon control is intense, aggressive, rage-filled and chaotic. The compositional process itself was capricious and improvisatory. The quartet sounds at times haphazard, yet requires an intricate, precise and focused interconnectedness. A melodic theme is compulsively referenced throughout this movement, but never fully realised. The work appears to weave in and out of time through a complex array of rhythmic devices - mixed meter, cross rhythm and polyrhythm, and metric modulation.
Dream, by contrast, is subdued, understated, languorous and pensive. This movement is intended to evoke the melancholia felt when trying to remember a dream and questioning what was truly real in the twilight fog of our memory. It utilises similar compositional devices such as rhythmic subversion of the melodic theme, yet has the steady inevitability of a ticking clock present in the returning slap tongue motif.
