Shadowed Pathways is a work for featured saxophone quartet with saxophone ensemble by Australian composer Andrew Ball. It was commissioned for the Australian Saxophone Orchestra and premiered at SaxOpen, Strasbourg, in 2015. The composer describes it as "an experiment into a pulsating semi-aleatoric large ensemble approach".
Ensemble parts for this piece include: Soli SATB quartet, Soprano, Alto 1 & 2, Tenor, Baritone. Recommended for >10 players doubling parts. The solo SATB parts should all read a single “unison” part, at written pitch. The piece is designed to work with the quartet as ‘one voice’ harmonically separated by the instruments’ natural transposition. The work is written for a large ensemble of mixed/variable instrumentation. There are aleatoric elements and directed improvisation throughout the work, as well as some simple non-standard notation. From figure [A] the piece is mostly conducted in time, yet should achieve an effect of textural variability and fluidity, as the individual components will differ from performance to performance. Randomness and unexpected nuances are allowed to emerge within the ensemble.
