Simurgh is a work for solo alto saxophone by Australian saxophonist, Andrew Ball. Recorded on his debut album, Forbidden Languages, Simurgh is an expressive and free piece which draws upon the musical influence of Ney (flute) playing. Performers are challenged with false fingerings, colour tremolos, elaborate rhythmic notation creating an increased sense of urgency as the piece builds. The composer has provided suggested fingerings for both 'colour' notes and multiphonics throughout. As with many other of Ball's works, the resulting musical work has an improvisatory feel which draws the audience in during the performance.

Forbidden Languages is a suite for solo saxophones, comprising a body of work composed and recorded between 2015 - 2017. Each stand-alone ‘movement’ is informed by an arcane aspect of symbolism or mythology, within the broader context of language as an abstract, imaginary, irrational, ephemeral concept. The mission of this work is to push the capabilities of the performer, to blur the line between composition, improvisation and experimentation, to challenge the technical and expressive limits of the instrument, and to inspire further experimentation with the saxophone.
