▪️Program Notes from the composer:
Three Serpents is composed in three continuous and interrelated movements: Hydra, Ouroboros, and Coatlique. Each movement refers to elements of the mythology and symbolism behind these ancient Greek and Aztec 'snake' deities. Hydra has multiple branching heads, Ouroboros is depicted as eating it's own tail, Coatlique is a maternal earth goddess who's decapitated head is represented with two 'serpents' of blood. Ball explores some foreign textures and melodic shapes, as the work requires each ensemble member to switch between their corresponding B-flat or E-flat instrument. The instrumentation ranges from double sopranos and double altos, through various combinations to double tenors and baritones.
